We are so happy to welcome a new international member – the Amref Flying Doctors. Amref Flying Doctors is the largest international air ambulance services provider in Africa. We asked Linda Hummel, Director of Global Fundraising Development, a few questions about the organization, and what they seek from a membership in the Norwegian Fundraising Association.
Can you tell us a little about Amref Flying Doctors?
Amref Flying Doctors, in Africa known as Amref Health Africa, is the leading health organization founded and headquartered in Kenya. We began in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa, providing medical assistance to remote communities. Today we reach the whole continent of Africa, through health development programs. With training, prevention and outreaches we support particularly women and children, to have a healthier future.
How do you work with fundraising?
We raise funds from individual donors, governments, corporate partners, foundations and events in many countries in Europe, North America and Africa.
What are the biggest challenges with fundraising?
Finding a good balance between a compelling story for fundraising, and the broader explanation of our development work.
What do you think that the donors feel about Amref FD´s fundraising work?
We like to hear from the donors, so that we can understand what appeals to them. Many like to contribute to improving the life of people who live in more difficult circumstances. Sometimes donors do not like to be asked too often, or they object to certain approaches. In this case we make sure we adjust our way of asking to meet their preferences.
What do you hope to get out of the membership?
The knowledge and information of the Norwegian Fundraising Association is very valuable to us, as well the codes of conduct they have developed. We also like to interact with the Association’s team and with our fundraising colleagues from other organizations, to learn and share.
